Spring is almost upon us, and Marian Renta has taken us to the river in her new Gospel single and its video “Water Deep” out today.

The song, written and produced by Renta, features a stripped back production, a full choir, a kick drum, and vocal chops for days. Rooted in old-style Black, southern hymns, “Water Deep” brings the message and importance of baptism to the forefront. Having been baptized in 2022, Renta reflects on her Christian journey and experience with baptism:
“I had my day of baptism in mind when writing this song, and I wanted to convey the sense of urgency I felt. I wanted others to feel it as I did. I was baptized in the ocean. I believed in Christ and had given Him my life. If you believe, what stops you? I had the story of Philip and the eunuch at the river on my mind as well. There’s so much debate and discussion among Christians about whether one needs to be baptized, and this song emphasizes the irrelevance of the discussion; if you believe that Jesus is your Lord and Savior, what stops you? Why not be baptized? I also felt it necessary to really emphasize the Gospel message and repentance, that Jesus died on the cross, arose, and brought everlasting life to us through His blood. But you have to repent. I don’t hear many faith-based songs speaking about repentance.”

The song’s music video, shot earlier this month, takes on a dramatic, cinematic style as it brings us into a church and into the deep woods. Directed by Renta, the video shows her sing-preaching in a traditional, southern-style church. Intercut throughout are shots of Renta toiling and stumbling through the woods. This particular shot shows a disheveled Renta battling internal conflict, and in the midst of spiritual warfare. The video takes a present-past-present approach, portraying Renta at her lowest before having come to Christ. Shot in Bernville, Pennsylvania at a historic 1800s Amish church, the videography took but half a day. Renta states:
“When I first walked into the church, I felt a wave of comfort and warmth. I could smell the wood, and the smell of grass coming from outside. The church is surrounded by vast rolling green hills and farmland. I couldn’t wait for the shoot to be finished so I could explore the area and commune with nature. It was such a gorgeous, warm day, and I just sat outside in the grass soaking it all in. I’m in love with Bernville and the Amish community. You can really feel the presence of God on this land.”
As Renta continues to embark on her new Gospel direction in her music, she intends to showcase her passion, valor, and natural flare for writing, producing, and performing immensely soulful, biblically-sound, Gospel music that is truly timeless and transcendent.
“Water Deep” is available on all streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music. The music video can now be streamed on all video streaming platforms, including Youtube and TIDAL.
