Marian Renta Reinvents Herself with the Release of Her Groundbreaking Gospel Album 'Let Him Hear'
Marian Renta makes an explosive declaration of faith with the highly anticipated release of her debut gospel album Let Him Hear today. Renta’s third studio album, Let Him Hear is her precious brainchild, crafted from every aspect of her Christian journey. The sound is vintage, raw, soulful, and funky, with some tender balladry sprinkled throughout. The album serves as the home for her string of critically praised singles, “Walk with Me”, “Water Deep”, “Bed of Flowers”, and “You Doin’ a Work in Me”.
Last year saw the release of Renta’s previous album, Summer Blind, home to her 2024 smash singles, “Body” and “Let Me In”; the album was initially on track for a late 2024 release, but Renta was thrust into a situation that would change the trajectory of her career indefinitely. Though she opts to keep the details private, the impact is evident, and she has made Let Him Hear the reset button for her sound, style, and creative well.
Her first single of 2026, “Walk with Me”, served as the introduction of a faith-based sound by Renta while retaining emotional, piano-driven hues from her traditional Pop balladry, but elevating it substantially with lyrics about Jesus, spiritual urgency, and vulnerability, fused with powerhouse choir vocals. Written and produced by Renta, the song is a massive burst of sunshine and hope for a musical landscape drenched in hedonism and sonic distortion. Renta followed up closely with “Water Deep”, a powerful anthem for baptism and repentance, driven heavily by massive choir arrangements and hymn-like flavor. As spring and early summer took hold, she dropped her sleek 90s boom-bap track “Bed of Flowers” and her 60s soul gem, “You Doin’ a Work in Me”. Like clockwork, Renta has consistently pumped out fiery faith-based singles that adopt the gospel genre from different perspectives while remaining cohesive and foundational.
Let Him Hear is a soulful concept album containing nine songs purposefully and strategically woven together for one mission: To be heard with spiritual ears. The album’s somewhat cryptic title is a reference to the many verses in the Holy Bible where Jesus states, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear”. In biblical context, this phrase is stated by Jesus after deeply meaningful parables with the intention to incite spiritual alertness. In a previous press statement, Renta stated that she intends for her music to “edify believers and plant seeds in unbelievers”.
Written, composed, arranged, performed, and produced entirely by Renta herself in her recording studio, MixFire Studios, in New York, the album’s sonic profile is warm, natural, lively, and organic. The mood of ‘Let Him Hear’ makes gentle swings from Funk-soul to southern Black hymn style, and soft piano with church choir to dark, somber soul akin to Nina Simone. Renta reached into her bag of tricks on this album, channeling her deepest influences such as the Edwin Hawkins Singers, Lashun Pace, Yolanda Adams, and Reverend James Cleveland. A devout Baptist, Renta spent much of her youth in the Baptist church surrounded by gospel-soul musicians and choir vocalists. Let Him Hear gives a warm, clean, comforting vibe that suggests the classic soul sound of the 60s, very much in the vein of Etta James, the Edwin Hawkins Singers, and Nina Simone. The album opens with lively, funk-style, hard-hitting drums reminiscent of Sly & the Family Stone’s “Sing a Simple Song”. The song progresses into an exciting arrangement consisting of 70s funk-soul piano chords, B3 organ, and funky mute guitar. Paired with this opening track, “Signs in the Sky”, are lyrics calling listeners to heed the warnings and prophecies written in Scripture. The song’s rhythm, soulful vocals, and supporting choir are tantalizing and perfectly placed at the album’s start to set the overall tone of the album. The album’s closing song, “In Our Father’s House”, introduces jazz elements to Renta’s repertoire, sharing striking similarities to Ella Fitzgerald and Nine Simone. Renta’s huskier contralto vocal tone flutters effortlessly on “I Weep”, a deeply somber piano-vocal piece that reflects on the problematic state of the world.
The album’s cover art, shot by Geminis, is a classic, earthy, warm photoshoot. Renta is shot in an oversized plaid flannel shirt with hues of green and tan, conveying the fall season and the comfort of laying in natural grass. Her face is relaxed, and her eyes are mesmerized as though staring at the stars. Her wavy, golden, light brown hair is strewn across the grass, and the sunset’s soft light gently illuminates her right side. Renta sought a photoshoot that reflects the earthy and comforting vibe of the album.
